Bates-Hendricks in Indianapolis
The Bates-Hendricks neighborhood is located just southeast of the downtown commercial district of Indianapolis. Fountain Square is to the east.
The name Bates-Hendricks gets its name from the historic Bates-Hendricks House which is located at 1526 S. New Jersey St. This is a proud centerpiece of the areas heritage. This is a vibrant historic part of the city.

Madison Avenue which serves as the western boundary of the neighborhood was also the first road built to service the new capital of Indianapolis. The Victorian neighborhood around the Bates-Hendricks House was built by James O. Woodruff, adding to the areas rich architectural legacy. There is a lot of history in this area from the Sanders-Childers house, The South Side Turnverein Hall, the Athenaeum which houses The Rathskeller (cities oldest restaurant). The layers of history here are fascinating.
The neighborhood has had many renovations and house flipping since 2010. Some of the renovations are filmed via the popular tv show Good Bones. The neighborhood mainly consists of one and two family homes blending historic charm with modern updates. The combination makes this a wonderful place to call home.
