Redflags to look for when remodeling your Indianapolis Home

Redflags to look for when remodeling your Indianapolis Home

Looking for and finding the right remodeling contractor can make all the difference in your project's success.  Vague contracts where things are not clearly outlined-scope of work, materials, payment schedule and how changes will be handled can cause issues.  This then leads to no consumer protections for the homeowner.  A good contract should allow for termination to the agreement if the contractor delivers poor workmanship or doesn't show up consistently.  Any additional costs should require a change order.  A fair payment schedule should be tied to project milestones.  A refusal to pull permits could be a redflag; could be a sign they are unlicensed.

Be sure that lien waivers are addressed.  A lien waiver is to ensure that if a contractor fails to pay their suppliers, the suppliers can't come after you by placing a lien on your property.  If this isn't addressed, you might find yourself unable to sell your home until this matter is resolved and the lien is released.

If it seems to good to be true, it very well could be.  Suspiciously low estimates can be intentional-if the bid lacks details about materials and labor, unexpected costs can pop up later.

Finally poor communication is not acceptable-clear and consistent communication is key for a smooth remodeling experience.
